GUMUSLUK

Buying property in GumuslukSituated at the western edge of the Bodrum peninsula, some 17 kilometres away from Bodrum itself, Gumusluk is a truly beautiful fishing village lying on the site of the ancient city of Myndos.

Thanks to the countless relics to be found here, much of Gumusluk has been designated an official site of archaeological interest; this means that much new development and construction is simply not allowed here, while cars are banned from the centre of the village. Sadly, many of the most impressive ruins were dismantled during the last century to make way for new buildings, but what remains is enough to give Gumusluk a unique historical ambience.

That is not to say that Gumusluk doesn’t have a modern life of its own. The village boasts a thriving fishing industry and a host of successful restaurants, while an array of sunken walls and ruins make Gumusluk an attractive target for divers. In particular, the island which separates Gumusluk’s two sheltered bays – known as Rabbit Island by local residents – has a number of exciting rock formations to explore, as well as a host of the creatures which lend it its name and which can be bought very cheaply at the thriving local market.

Property in TurkeyOne of Gumusluk’s biggest draws is its excellent beach (awarded Blue Flag status); a good range of water sports are available here for those who can drag themselves off the pristine sand. Further beaches nearby include those of Turgutreis and Yalikavak, both excellent with some extremely attractive bars and restaurants.

Tourism

Property on the Bodrum peninsulaAs with the rest of the Bodrum peninsula, Gumusluk has a growing tourist market which is, however, affected by the restrictions on development which apply to much of the town: ie, the demand for beds has grown faster than supply has been able to keep up. With this in mind a well-placed rental home could bring in a substantial sum if marketed to the more relaxed, urbane end of the market. The season runs from May through September, with July and August the peak season for rentals.

Transport

Gumusluk is served by Bodrum airport approximately 40 kilometres away (see “Bodrum” for flight details). Taxis to and from Bodrum, the airport and other towns on the peninsula are easily accessible, but bear in mind the roads are quite windy and journeys may take longer than they appear on maps beforehand. Ferries to and from other Turkish resorts and the Greek islands of Kos and Rhodes dock in Bodrum; private boats will be able to take you into Gumusluk itself.

Nightlife:

Gumusluk PropertyGumusluk is renowned for its tranquility and serenity and as such is not really the place to look for loud nocturnal partying. Although there are a number of bars in the village they are very laid-back and certainly not suitable for raucous carousing. However, there are plenty of other places on the peninsula offering a more hectic nightlife; Gumusluk should be seen as an oasis of peace and calm.

Restaurants:

Renowned – and rightly so – for its seafood, Gumusluk has a number of high-quality restaurants on the waterfront specialising in locally caught fish and seafood dishes. While not particularly cheap by Turkish standards, these will still seem very reasonable to most western Europeans.
